September 13 - German American Heritage Museum - Washington DC You're invited to this month's Fruehschoppen on Saturday, September 13th, at 11:00 AM, at the German-American Museum in Washington DC. Enjoy a Bavarian-style brunch while getting to meet the Project Manager of the latest exhibit at the GAHM "Utopia: Revisiting a German State in America".
"Utopia", on loan from the Traveling Summer Republic - a group of artists, filmmakers, and scholars based in Germany and the US tells the story of the Giessen Emigration Society, a group of 500 individuals, who decided to emigrate from Germany en masse in 1834 and to re-settle on the American frontier. Comprised of dreamers and visionaries, the emigrants strove to establish a democratic German-speaking state on US soil. As evident by the exhibit name, their goal was never realized, though these immigrants quickly integrated and shaped American society by supporting the Abolitionist movement and becoming involved in local politics.
Peter Roloff's exhibit, comprised of documentaries, text, and an array of photographs, thoroughly depicts the Giessen Emigration Society's journey to the US via Bremerhaven and Baltimore to their settlement in present-day Missouri, and their long-lasting contributions to American society.
Delve into this riveting exhibit, while getting the chance to meet Peter Roloff. Beginning at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 13th. In the spirit of Fruehschoppen, Bavarian-style pretzels, weisswurst, and drinks will be served. A social hour will take place from 11:00 - 12:00, followed by remarks from Peter Roloff.
Tickets for this all-inclusive event are $15 for GAHF-members, $20 for non-members, and $10 for students. Learn more at www.gahmusa.org

August 15 thru September 27, 2014 -- Postcards from the Trenches: Germans and Americans Visualize the Great War
This Metro DC exhibit is about ordinary soldiers, who often conveyed their experiences through “field postcards,” blank postcards distributed to soldiers at the war front on which they corresponded with their loved ones at home.
Highlighting the importance of postcards as a form of social and political communication during the first world conflict between 1914 and 1918, the collection focuses on beautifully painted postcards by the German expressionist artist Otto Schubert who sent almost 80 postcards to his fiancé while on the Western Front. They provide a compelling visual record of events.
In addition to Otto Schubert’s postcards and several of his war-related graphic works, images from the American Expeditionary Force artists, posters, graphic works, objects, and additional postcards will be on view. Loans are from private collectors, the US Army Art Museum, Ft. Belvoir, the World War One Museum, Kansas City, the Wende Museum, Culver City, CA, and LACMA.
The exhibit is being held at The Pepco Edison Place Gallery located at 702 8th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20068 (accessible via Metro Center and Gallery Place Metro stops), and is supported by the German Information Center at the German Embassy.
Complete information about this free exhibit plus special lectures can be found at: http://postcardsfromthetrenchesexhibit.tumblr.com/ __________________________________________________________________________________

April 11, 12, 13, 2014 -- The COLUMBIA SCHUETZEN VEREIN will conduct another regularly scheduled three day gathering, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 11, 12, 13, under the direction of Schuetzen Meister (, and gun smith) Chris Christensen.
The matches and festivities take place on the grounds of the Thurmont Conservation and Sportsman's Club (TCSC) near Thurmont, Maryland, north of Washington DC and south of Gettysburg off of US-15.
There are 14 paved shooting positions beneath an all weather cover, the range is well maintained and features permanent target frames, Camping is available for $15 per night.
The Columbia S.V. has a lengthy and distinctive history of promoting and supporting schuetzen style single shot rifle shooting in accordance with A.S.S.R.A. Rules and Procedures. Participants primarily travel from Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and beyond to shoot and socialize during these three-day matches.
This is a shooting get-together for non-bolt action single-shot rifles. There are classes for 22Rim Fire and Center Fire schuetzen-type rifles with "any" sights, and for big-bore (.39+ cal) with iron sights.
While there is some serious competition going on, many come just to engage in conversation about antique rifles, show them off, observe and socialize. Casual shooters who would like to try their hand at a target or two are welcome at the usual guest range fee of $3, plus $1/target. "Loaner" rifles are often available. There is no fee for spectators. Regular (match) entry fee is $15 a day or $35 for the weekend plus $1 per each target.
Brats, burgers and beverages are included in entry fees as the noon time recess sees the charcoal grill lined and sizzling with prime meat sausages on toasted buns and all the "fixin's".
Reserved for the day's end, friendly conversations turn to the day's scores, and exchange of ideas, show-and-tell and gun smithing.
Courses of Fire include re-entry matches Offhand for score, Benchrest for score, Benchrest for group, and (for big bore) sitting with X-sticks for score. The RF and CF Hudson 100-shot matches are single entry. 22RF matches are at 100 yd, others at 200 yd. A few novelty matches are offered. The matches are not squadded, i.e., you can come at any time and fire any match on any relay. All "per target" entry fees in excess of the actual cost of the targets are returned as prize money.
Driving directions to Thurmont Conservation and Sportsman's Club (TCSC) - from the South, take US Rte 15 north from Frederick MD about 6 miles to Old Frederick Road. Leaving Creagerstown, bear right at the "Y" to stay on OFR. 9.9 miles from Emmitsburg, you will come to Hunt Club Road. Observing the 15mph speed limit on the grounds, drive past the club buildings and swimming pool to the rifle range at the bottom of the hill adjacent to the Monocacy River.
